Minimized Opened Windows to Tray with Tray Everything

To have some of your running programs or opened windows minimized to tray could be helpful if you open too many windows. Your taskbar has more space and you might be able to concentrate more on certain programs. Taskbar indeed has its own options to manage the opened applications or folders, but the options may no longer enough in some situations. On the other hand, it is not every application has the ability to minimize itself to the tray. Hence, you might want to try Tray Everything.

Tray Everything could help you minimizing selected windows either from its main window, by clicking the minimize button on every opened window, or by adding a new button to each window. The ability to password protect minimized windows is a great addition. For whatever reason, optionally, you can hide opened windows instead of minimizing to tray.

Tray Everything also enables automatic minimize where all inactive windows will be automatically minimized after certain periods, but you can put any opened window to tray with a single press of a shortcut key if you want an easier way to do it manually instead.

Tray Everything is a portable freeware for Windows 95/98/Me/2000/XP. It hasn't been tested on Windows Vista yet.

Change Drive Icon in Windows Vista With Drive Icon Changer

Changing drive icon in Windows Vista is easy if you use Drive Icon Changer since it is a free program that has been specifically designed to do the changing instantly. If creating .inf file in root drive sounds too technical for you, or you just want to do it the easiest way you can, then this is the right utility to use. It just takes a couple of clicks to apply custom drive icon for each drive in your Windows explorer.

How to Change Drive Icon in Windows Vista Using Drive Icon Changer

  • After downloading the program, run it as an administrator.
  • Select which drive you want to change the icon from the drop-down menu within the main window of the program.
  • Choose which icon from your icon collection to be used to replace the original drive icon.
  • Click the save button and it's all done.

If the result of changing is ugly, you can replace it with another icon as many as you need to or you can just get back to the standard drive icon.

This program changes the drive icon by automatically creating a file named as Autorun.if. This file, along with a copy of the selected icon, are put inside the root drive. Both are hidden files, so it won't be displayed inside the root drive unless you want it to.

Though you can change the drive icon instantly using the program, if you want to learn the autorun.inf file, it only takes a little bit time of yours to be able to utilize the file to manually change the icon drive.

Drive Icon Changer is a freeware for Windows Vista and requires .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 to run it on your computer. If you don't have this .NET Framework 3.5 SP1 installed yet, then you need to download and install it first. Don't forget to download the vista drive icon pack either.

Locked File & Folder? Rename, Move, Delete It In Windows Explorer - Vista, XP, 2003, 2000

Somehow, you can't rename a file or folder. You try to move it, but it is unable to be moved. Even your attempt to delete it doesn't work, too. The file/folder is locked. You try to close the Windows explorer, but you still can't rename, move, or delete it. A message comes up say that it is being used by another program, but it won't tell which one is. It only says one of these things:

  • Cannot delete file: Access is denied
  • There has been a sharing violation.
  • The source or destination file may be in use.
  • The file is in use by another program or user.
  • Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.

The old solution would be to restart Windows to be able to delete, move, or rename the locked file/folder. It's a waste of time. If you still do the same way, why don't use Unlocker instead?

With this free program, everything can be done instantly within your Windows explorer. You can rename any locked file or folder using Windows explorer right click menu. You can move any locked file from a folder to wherever you like. Deleting it won't be a problem either. All are done without restarting Windows.

Optionally, you can also use the so-called Unlocker Assistant. With this extra tiny tool, Unlocker will activate itself automatically everytime you try to rename, delete, or move a file that is being locked. So, you won't need to unlock it through the Windows explorer right-click menu.

Unlocker is a freeware and designed to work under Windows 2000 / XP / 2003 / Vista. I highly recommend it.

Delete Broken Windows Shortcuts

While shortcuts are very helpful in opening files or folders easier, they can create a problem when files or folders that point to them are deleted. Instead of deleting these shortcuts automatically, Windows decides to leave the task to you. Thus, you may have a lot of invalid shortcuts scattered in your system eating up your harddisk space over time.

Instead of manually searching for the invalid shortcuts one by one, you can hand it over to Orphans Remover. This free program will assist you in cleaning all of the broken shortcuts located at start menu, desktop, favorites, history, recent documents, temp directory, program files, application data, or any folder you specify. Furthermore, you can include the shortcuts that point to files on network or removable drives, ram disks and cd-rom drives in the searching.
